Do you think about your own childhood photographs? Your favorite ones?
Lately, that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been thinking about my childhood photographs that come to life so many years later. Favorite memories with loved ones. The ones I can remember without looking through them.
What I realized is that my favorite photos are the ones where my mom’s smile hasn’t changed a bit. They’re the photographs my dad took of me and my sisters playing. They’re my baby photos with my hair sticking straight up as if I was constantly surrounded by static. They’re the photographs my dad took of my mom when she wasn’t looking.
What all of these have in common is the authenticity rooted in them. They were created out of joy and out of love. They weren’t forced, they were natural. The emotions felt in that moment were real.
That’s what I hope to create.
Photographs where years later, you can instantly recognize your mom’s naturally joyful smile so you can see that it hasn’t changed, just deepened in wrinkles and in love. To create photographs is to see the way your dad looked at you with so much pride and so much affection.
I hope to create even just one image that stands out to your son or daughter one day, many years from now. One that comes with them to college and their first apartment. To really feel the love present in their life. To transport them to easy, happy times.
And this beautiful family, there are so many favorites. So many photographs that evoke happiness. Their energy was so natural, so easy to love and be loved. Baby Teia smiled at the drop of a pin! They are joy. They are love. There is no such thing as perfect but my goodness, they are close. 💛
